A Home Without Flowers Is Like a Room Without Light

A Home Without Flowers Is Like a Room Without Light

When people think about interior design, they often focus on furniture, paint colours, or statement pieces. But for me, there’s one design element that transforms a house into a home more than anything else: flowers.

Flowers aren’t just decoration. They’re architecture. They set the mood, soften edges, and create presence. Much like light, they have the power to change how you feel in a space.

That’s why I was delighted to share my philosophy in a recent full-page feature with the Business Post (Irish Tatler), where I talked about how to transform a home into an inspired space using contrast, texture, and florals

From Home of the Year to the Business Post

You may have seen my home featured as a finalist on RTÉ’s Home of the Year (Season 11, Episode 7, available now on RTÉ Player). What stood out to the judges — and what I practice in all of my design work — is that the smallest details often carry the most emotional weight. Flowers, in particular, bring a sense of soul to a room that no other element can replicate.

My 3 Styling Principles

Here are three key takeaways I shared in the Business Post feature:

1️⃣ Start with feeling, not Pinterest. Before choosing colours or finishes, ask yourself how you want the space to feel — calm, energetic, dramatic, or warm. Design should begin with emotion, not imitation.

2️⃣ Layer materials for depth. I often combine marble, wood, and textiles to create richness. Contrast creates interest, and textures tell stories.

3️⃣ Use florals as architecture, not filler. Preserved florals — like those from One More Thing — are more than an accessory. They create scale, structure, and mood, all while lasting for months without upkeep.

Why Florals Matter

A home without flowers feels unfinished, almost as though it’s missing light. Whether fresh or preserved, florals breathe energy into a room. They’re the difference between a beautiful space and a soulful one.
